Sustainable Development Goal 4
Transforming our world: One small “graphic” step at a time.
As a studio, we found creative ways to communicate and raise awareness about the United Nations Sustainable Development 17 goals. I decided to focus on SDG 4, “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” I utilized a simple style of illustration and movement to appeal to a wider age range.
I created a short animation with the purpose of raising awareness about the issue of educational inequality in America. As a high schooler, I moved from a low-funded district to an extremely well-funded district. Having been in both situations, I had first hand experience with how much of a boost a well-funded district provides for its students.

I learned that disparities in education along the lines of gender, urban-rural location and other dimensions still run deep, and more investments in education infrastructure are required, particularly in LDCs. I realized that I wanted my video to encourage people to take action. I also found ways to incorporate my design style with the United Nations brand guidelines.
After storyboarding several ideas I settled on visualizing my concept with players on platforms.
Once I had created my assets, I tested different color schemes. I chose the last color scheme because it provided the right amount of contrast and was the most appropriate for my target audience.
This project gave me a better understanding of the representation process, i.e., deciding on key design elements that trigger a greater level of understanding and involvement from the audience. I considered relationships between form, type and symbol to visually articulate information about the subject.
I also figured out a more time efficient workflow for myself. For this project, I continued developing the visual style into the animation stage. Consequently, I spent time replacing old assets with revised assets. In the future, I plan on distributing my time between planning and executing more appropriately.
